Before coming to Taiwan, we tried to prepare as much as possible. One thing we definitely did not prepare for and took for granted back home was how to dispose of all your trash. Right now we have a TON of recycling and trash from moving and buying things for our apartment. Well, here in Taiwan you first have to go to 7-11 and buy city approved trash bags. Then, four days a week you have to bring your trash out to the street corner and throw the bag in the garbage truck yourself. The garbage truck plays music kind of like a ice cream truck does back home haha. For recycling, you have to seperate your recycling and they only pick up certain recycling on certain days. They are very picky. I guess a while back people used to liter all over and Taiwan was very dirty so they came up with this system for everyone to be responsible for their own trash....and they are. There is not trash ANYWHERE around here. Taipei is very clean. One thing we think is super annoying is there is not trash cans anywhere around the city. So if you buy some food or a latte you have to carry around your garbage until you get home and throw it in your own trash. We always discuss how this is so interesting and people don't just liter all over Taipei because there is no trash cans. The people here are very honest and take pride in their city and country. Kind of going off topic...but people leave their belongings outside and all around where back home we would be very conscious about if we leave something in a place where it would get stolen. You don't really have to worry about that here. The atmosphere is kind, honest, and helpful! But the trash is still something we are trying to pick up.
