Today was my first day teaching English in Taiwan! It is still the summer classes, regular classes don't start until September but I am thankful to have the summer classes to start feeling comfortable. Classes are only from 3-6pm and I only have two classes a day. The students switch classes and the teachers stay in the same room. I have about 10 students in each class for the summer so about 20 kids a day. In September, I will have about 30-40 students. I love having smaller class sizes and being able to have a lot more one-on-one time! It is also nice because I will have the same students I have now in September so it gives me a lot of time to get to know my students!
It was a pretty crazy day today because I was not able to go into my classroom prior to today because another teacher was in the room teaching the classes. Summer classes do not provide a curriculum either so I was pretty much thrown into the dark. I was also thankful for my schooling that cost a pretty penny today (I'd like to take the opportunity to thank my dad & mom;) lol! The classroom was super unorganized and a lot of today ended up being trial and error with finding students materials and books during class time. I am going to go in earlier tomorrow to try and organize things in the classroom a little better! I still ended up having a great time getting to know my new students! It would definitely be an advantage to know Chinese as an English teacher because the students like to connect the English word and the Chinese word and I am not able to confirm that the Chinese word is the correct term for the English word. But everything else went smoothly and I am excited to see how much my students grow over the next year!
Oh yeah! Also, on Saturday we took the MRT to Taipei 101. We were going to go walk around and then Chris saw some basketballs bouncing at the Adidas 101 court nearby and wanted to take a look. We started to walk there when Chris spotted a bar with his favorite beer Elysian. We stopped by there and he grabbed a Men's Room beer and I tried some Elysian beer even though beer isn't my favorite. He was pretty happy since Elysian is a Seattle based brewery and we never thought he could find that type of beer in Taiwan. Afterwards, he stopped by the Adidas court and he looked like a dog watching a ball being thrown arond he wanted to play so bad lol. He kept asking questions about how to play even though no one spoke good English. Better luck next time!;) He has been emailing some people about playing ball so hopefully he can find something soon!
