On Tuesday we took a journey up to Taiwan's north coast. It took about an hour to get to the Northeast part of Taiwan's coast from Taipei. We were staying at a resort right on the water...but once we got there we were not all that impressed with the resort and the beach we offered so we opted to stay just one night instead of two. We like beaches where we can swim rather than being enclosed to certain spots. Most of Taiwan's beaches are enclosed because of the high and unpredictable churning waves...but this beach was almost a joke how closed off it was. So instead of even going in the water we decided to go check out a Geopark about a mile away.
We rode bikes there and paid a small fee to get into the park. The park was actually super fun and interesting and made the hotel seem not quite as bad. There were different types of rocks caused by sea erosion and it is crazy to see that the ocean is the cause of some amazing things! Everything there used to be under the sea until geological forces pushed it out. We then hiked a small mountain there and watched the sun set across the sea and had a 360 degree view. After, we rode our bikes to a small little restaurant that had fresh seafood. The Taiwanese seem to serve all of their seafood just as the catch it...eyeballs and all. We ordered some shrimp and rice and I quickly had to get over my fear of the tearing off the head and legs if I wanted to eat because Chris was quickly devouring it lol. Even though I had to throw them down a few times because I was so grossed out I ended up getting through it haha...and plus we had an amazing wear of the ocean!
Even though the beach was a bummer we ended up having a great time and the next day we went to a new beach at most Northern part of Taiwan. We got in the water and then a huge storm hit from a typhoon that was nearby. We had rented a floaty toy so we were floating on these huge waves while huge rain drops was pelting us in the eyes. We even met someone from California who was visiting his family and he was able to speak perfect English so we talked to him a little while floating in the water during the storm. He gave us some inspiration and told us we had to try food we would never try back home! The storm wasn't going to die down anytime soon so we ran to the bus station with sandy and wet clothes and belongings and decided it was probably best to just head home since we didn't have anywhere to stay for the night. We decided we will try explore more when there isn't huge thunderstorms going on!
